The Dell Music Center Presents 'The Meeting'

The Dell Music Center, in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia, presents "The Meeting,"? a play by Jeff Stetson, on Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 pm. Called "provocative,? "persuasive,? and "powerful"? by audiences, the play is a fictional account of a meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., played by Reverend Dr. Alyn E. Waller and Malcolm X, played by Tariq Karim El-Shabazz, Esq. It is directed by Barrymore Award Winner Ozzie Jones, artistic director of the Rhythm One Company and director of the Shipley School performing arts program. Jones is a nominee for the 2014 Pew Charitable Trust Award for a career of artistic excellence in theatre.

This marks the first time that a drama will be performed at The Dell Music Center. More important, says Susan Slawson, First Deputy Commissioner Recreation & Programs, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, "it offers young people lessons in history, politics, social action, conflict resolution and community building. Every Philadelphia school student should see this play.

While both Dr. King and Malcolm X were both champions of African-American self-determination, their ideologies were largely conflicting. "The Meeting" explores these differences and the leaders' mutual concern for their communities with a powerful underlying message of peace.

"Capturing the simple, small true humanity of these men is the goal of this production, says Jones. "We are searching in art for the face of the real people, and to find our own reflection. Greatness and vision does not belong to any age or any man. It must be cultivated.?

Tickets are $25 or $20 and can be purchased at the Dell Box Office.
