You know about the great medical schools of Philadelphia. But you probably don't know about the infamous Eclectic Medical College of Pennsylvania and its Dean, Dr. John Buchanan. Join the Section on Medical History as the College of Physicians of Philadelphia hosts David Johnson, Senior Vice President for Assessment, Federation of State Medical Boards. Mr. Johnson will recount the fascinating but little-known story from 19th century Philadelphia featuring a fake suicide, investigative reporters, the "trunk murder"? mystery, spiritualism, and a manhunt into Canada. This episode had great impact on the medical profession and licensing.

About the Speaker:
David Johnson serves as Sr. Vice President for Assessment at the Federation of State Medical Boards where he oversees FSMB activities related to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and the Special Purpose Examination (SPEX). His publications span a broad range of topics under medical licensing and regulation, including licensing examinations, CME, physician demographics, social media and international medical schools. These publications have appeared in the Journal of Medical Regulation, Annals of Internal Medicine, Academic Medicine, Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions and the Guide to Medical Education in the Teaching Hospital. He is the primary author of Medical Licensing and Discipline in America: A History of the Federation of State Medical Boards. His more recent research into aspects of the 19th century history of medicine has appeared in the Bulletin of the History of Medicine. He is currently researching the origins and development of medical boards' disciplinary function.
