Saint Katharine: The Life of Katharine Drexel Lecture


Born into a wealthy and prestigious Philadelphia family, Katharine "Kitty"? Drexel could have lived as a socialite with an enormous inheritance. Instead, with the encouragement of Pope Leo XIII, she undertook the support of both Native and African Americans, finally taking vows and establishing her own order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Athenaeum member Cordelia Frances Biddle teaches writing at Drexel University and is also the author of the Martha Beale series of mysteries set in 19th-century Philadelphia. She has contributed to Town and Country, Hemispheres, and W, and won the 1997 SATW Lowell Thomas travel-writing award for "Three Perfect Days in Philadelphia. Reception and book signing to follow.
