Inspired by the annual 48-Hour Film Festival, in which filmmakers produce a short film in only two days, SHMD 2008-09 resident choreographers Meg Foley, Erin Foreman-Murray, Jumatatu Poe, and Olive Prince are each creating short pieces in the space of 48 hours. Each artist comes up with five specific directions or elements to be included in a dance work and assigns these to two other choreographers. The elements may be movement phrases, visual images, sounds or music, costumes, props, specific interactions – almost anything. The choreographers who receive the “mission packets” of directions then have 48 hours to design a piece that incorporates them. The “48 Hours” concept challenges dance artists' habits and has produced considerable innovation in performance.
