Aquatic Insects, Water Quality, and You

Aquatic insects have curious capabilities and display amazing adaptations. They can also be used as bioindicators to characterize water quality in streams and help regulators and researchers identify stressors to our water quality.

Join Stefanie Kroll for a talk about these fascinating creatures, why it’s important to protect our waterways for the future, and how everyday citizens can help in those efforts.

About the Speaker

Stefanie Kroll is the watershed ecology section leader at the Patrick Center for Environmental Science, a research group at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. She is also an assistant research professor at Drexel in the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Before returning to graduate school in the United States and Spain, she worked in interpretation and translation and taught English for several years. Her current focus on aquatic ecosystems is not surprising given that she grew up fishing and canoeing in the lakes and streams of New York State and surrounding areas. She volunteers with the Raritan Headwaters Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership, and the academy’s Women in Natural Sciences program.

About the Series

Dive into fascinating stories of science with our Saturday Speaker Series!

Once a month, from September to May, a speaker will offer a short talk on an intriguing scientific topic, followed by a Q&A or discussion over complimentary tea and coffee. Afterward, feel free to mingle with other guests and the speaker, or spend time visiting our free museum.

Admission is free, and no reservations are necessary.
