Seeking Freedom: Portraits of Mass Incarceration by Carolyn Harper

Mass incarceration is a complex issue of alarming concern for present-day America. At this time, The US incarcerates more people than any other nation in the world. America's approach to punishment disproportionately affects the poor and people of color. It lacks a foundation that truly protects the public and inflicts overly harsh sentences. Using visual art and storytelling as a catalyst, artist Carolyn Harper seeks to increase awareness of mass incarceration and wrongfully convicted individuals within the US judicial system. The portraits Harper has created provide faces to the historically faceless, nameless and powerless. They consist of large scale, hand-sewn quilts and hand-embroidered batik portraits. Using graphic representation of society’s forgotten members, they shout, “See ME! Look At Me!”
