Living History Lecture Series: The Plague of 1793: Yellow Fever

The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 swept through Philadelphia like wildfire from August through the first hard frost of October. The disease was a mystery to many: they knew not the origins of the disease, nor how it was spread, nor even the best way to cure the disease. It was a time of misconceptions, devastation, and chaos. When the dreadful disease had run its course there were an estimated 5000 souls taken with it. Elizabeth Drinker, wife of wealthy Quaker Merchant, Henry Drinker, recorded much of her experience of the epidemic, whether she saw it first hand or learned more through letters and conversations. As the family's primary healthcare advisor, Elizabeth is perfectly suited to discuss the assumptions, methods and practices of the day, and share information about not only her personal experience, but that of many others. Through Elizabeth, and her diary, we are invited into the murky waters of 18th century health care and receive an eyewitness view to the actions of her fellow citizens at this time of crisis.
