Harriton Historic Skills Workshop: Drop Spindle Wool Spinning Workshop

Harriton Historic Skills Series: Drop Spindle Spinning Workshop with Celeste Sherry. 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (Check-in and coffee starts at 9:30 am.) Suitable for women, men, and children ages 12 and above. Are you fidgety? Do you want to learn how to channel that energy in a positive way? Maybe you're searching for a contemplative task to disconnect from technology? If so, you may want to consider attending this hands-on workshop with Celeste Sherry: Spinner of Wool - and More. Celeste is an engaging teacher who loves to teach about spinning and wool. The class is limited to 10 participants so sign up soon! Price includes materials. You'll leave this workshop equipped with the tools and basic skills to turn wool into yarn. We will start with a short talk & demo about spinning and wool/fiber use in the 18th century and before. Spinning will be demonstrated on a reproduction Saxony spinning wheel and on a drop spindle. Celeste will have a variety of fibers (wool, flax, silk, etc.), 18th century textile tools & wool/linen garments as part of her display, and she will be dressed in the habit of a middle-class woman of 1775. Activities will include wool preparation (wool picking & carding). Participants will then be instructed on the construction of a wooden drop spindle and will be provided with materials and hands-on guidance as they make their own drop spindles. They will then practice spinning wool on their new spindles. Participants will go home with a kit that includes drop spindle, instructions, mini-sachet, and wool rolags/rovings. Additional drop spindle kits, sachets, wool, etc. will be available for purchase. Registration fees include: morning coffee and baked goods, all communal supplies used during the workshop such as wool roving and drop spindle parts. Registration and coffee begin at 9:30 a.m. with the workshop beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m. We will not break for lunch but you are welcome to bring a lunch to eat immediately following the workshop.
