4-day Workshop | Late Medieval Age Illumination: Filigree Versals with Humanist Script


In this workshop based on the 16th Century Spanish Hymnal found in the Glencairn Museum library, you will learn the Humanist script and the Filigree style of late medieval manuscript illumination and design your own project. Make a page with a favorite hymn, a birth, or baptism announcement.

Saturdays in February: 5, 12, 19, 26
12:30-4:30 pm
$200 per person.
Materials: $45; $50 to use true animal vellum.
Basic, Gold, and Patron Museum Members receive a 10% discount on the registration fee, please call 267.502.2600 or email [email protected] to let Visitors Services know that you will be attending and register as usual. The cost will be $180.
Ages 18 and up. Registration required by Saturday January 29.
$150 deposit is due to reserve spot. Balance is due the first day of class. Deposits are non-refundable except in the case of teacher cancellation.

About the instructor: Susan Kelly vonMedicus was born in Philadelphia to the fabled Kelly clan, a devout Irish-Catholic family. Her parents, John B. (Jack) Kelly, Jr. and Mary Freeman, were both Olympic athletes. Her aunt, movie star Grace Kelly, married Prince Rainier III of Monaco to become Grace, Princess of Monaco. Susan has recently completed an icon as a gift for the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Monaco, a commission from her cousin Prince Albert II to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the archdiocese of Monaco.

Ms. Kelly vonMedicus was educated at the following institutions: Mater Misericordiae Academy; The Baldwin School; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and The Prosopon School of Iconology. From January through April of 2013, she was an artist-in-residence at the Burren College of Art on the west coast of Ireland, just a few miles down the coast from Westport, County, Mayo, where the Kelly family emigrated from in the late 19th century. The mother of three sons, Susan lives and works in the Philadelphia area, creating artwork and keeping a garden, chickens, and bees.
