Multi-Disciplinary Artist Al-baseer Holly Curates "Back to My Roots" Exhibition at 2025 Roots Picnic

WHAT: "Back to My Roots" - A curated art exhibition by multidisciplinary visual artist Al-baseer Holly featuring works from ten prominent artists at the 2025 Roots Picnic music festival. WHEN: May 31 - June 1, 2025 WHERE: Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA WHO: Curated by Al-baseer Holly, featuring multi-disciplinary artists Kevin "Wak" Williams, Cristina Martinez, Nelson Makamo, Shanina Dionna, Julian Gaines, Calvin Clausell Jr, Mia Lee, Chuck Styles, Symonne Larison Jones, Alim Smith, and photographer Ricky Shoebio. DETAILS: Philadelphia native Al-baseer Holly, a multidisciplinary visual artist whose bold, thought-provoking work has attracted collectors including Damien Hirst, Tommy Hilfiger, and Michael Jordan, returns to his hometown to curate his fourth exhibition at the Roots Picnic. This year’s exhibition titled, "Back to My Roots" celebrates the journeys and stories of Black and Brown people. Holly, who began his creative journey as a recording artist collaborating with iconic artists including Pharrell Williams before evolving into a self-taught visual artist, has assembled a powerful group of artists in response to the current political climate. His fourth consecutive year curating for the festival, Holly's 2025 exhibition aims to highlight the accomplishments of Black and Brown people in America while addressing contemporary social issues. "With the current political climate, I wanted to take a strong stance on the issues we face today but highlight the accomplishments we've made in America as Black and Brown people," says Holly. "I wanted to assemble a group of very strong storytellers through the medium of art. Each artist has their own unique way of highlighting our community, and I feel very blessed to have them all apart at this moment." Among the featured artists is Cristina Martinez, whose work Holly praises for its "profound and moving" portrayal of women of color. South African and TIME Magazine cover artist Nelson Makamo’s charcoal and paint works on beautiful linens tell "the complicated and important story of our lineage and our roots." Mià Lee's striking use of color and character design creates visually commanding pieces, while Kevin's oil paintings "command attention in the room" with their powerful storytelling. Calvin's beautiful blending techniques as a realism painter round out this exceptional lineup. The exhibition will be located in the VIP GOLD section of the Roots Picnic at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, offering attendees an immersive art experience alongside the musical performances that have made the festival a cultural cornerstone.
