RENT , The Musical

The Brook Arts Center, in association with the Media and Performance Collective, will launch their production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1996 Best Musical Tony Award winner, "RENT," this November. Written by Jonathan Larson and debuting on Broadway 25 years ago, “RENT” will run November 12-21, 2021 at the historic Brook Arts Center in Bound Brook, NJ. Inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, “RENT” follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side under the shadow of the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the early 1990’s. “RENT” is a dramatic, yet uplifting story, using rock music to evoke the tough, angry, and terrifying reality of a world wrought with drug addiction, suicide, and AIDS — all underscored by a theme of hope. For a quarter of a century, Jonathan Larson’s “RENT” has inspired us to choose love over fear and to live without regret.

“It gives people hope who feel that ‘I’m different’ and ‘I don’t fit.’ This says, ‘It doesn’t matter,’” says James Nicola, artistic director of New York Theater Workshop, which nurtured “Rent.” ” It says, ‘You can go out and make your own community.’” With its inspiring message of joy and aspiration in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.
