The Philadelphia Phillies are our FAVE Major League Baseball team (of course!) and they've been around since 1883. They're also one of the oldest and most storied franchises in the sport, with a rich history filled with fascinating facts and achievements.

Here are a few fun ("phun") Phillies baseball facts:

  1. The first professional baseball game in history was played in ________? You guessed it = Philadelphia. On May 4, 1871, the Philadelphia Athletics hosted the Boston Red Stockings at Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia. This game is considered the first-ever professional baseball game, and the Athletics lost 5-1.

  2. The Phillies were originally called the ______? When the team was founded (1883) they were called the Philadelphia Quakers. The name was changed to the Phillies in 1890 after the team's owners purchased the franchise.

  3. The Phillies have played at the same ballpark since 2004 with Citizens Bank Park being their home stadium (with a seating capacity of 42,792).

  4. The Phillies are WINNERS! They've won two World Series championships -- the first World Series championship in 1980, defeating the Kansas City Royals in six games, and the second championship in 2008, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in five games.

  5. The Phillies have retired six numbers. Richie Ashburn (#1), Robin Roberts (#36), Steve Carlton (#32), Mike Schmidt (#20), Jim Bunning (#14), and Jackie Robinson (#42).

  6. Mike Schmidt is the Phillies' all-time home run leader. Mike Schmidt hit 548 home runs during his career with the Phillies, which is the most in franchise history. He also won three National League Most Valuable Player awards and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.

  7. The Phillies have had 37 managers in their history. Since their inception in 1883, the Phillies have had 37 different managers. The most successful manager in Phillies history is Charlie Manuel, who led the team to its 2008 World Series championship.

  8. The Phillies had some very notable players. In addition to Mike Schmidt, the Phillies have had many other great players throughout their history, including Steve Carlton, Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Curt Schilling, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard.

  9. The Phanatic: The Phillie Phanatic is the official Phillies mascot, and is considered one of the most beloved mascots in sports. He's been entertaining fans since 1978, known for his zany antics and humorous personality. The Phanatic is also a Hall of Famer  -- inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2005.

  10. Rivalray. The Phillies have a pretty fierce rivalry with the New York Met that dates back to the 1960s. This intensified in the 1980s when both teams were competing for National League East titles. Today, the rivalry remains strong and is one of the most heated in baseball.

Whether you're a die-hard Phillies fan or just a casual observer, there's no denying the impact this team has had on the game of BASEBALL, and we'll be PARTYING with PHILLIES FANS, BEER FANS -- AND ANYONE WHO LOVES A GREAT TIME, this September 30th for our signature event, The Philadelphia All-Star Craft Beer, Wine, and Cocktail Festival.
