Unraveling! Fiber Arts Guild Program Oct 28
Why would you unravel a sweater? To use the yarn in a newer, better project of course. The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet at 10 am on Saturday , October 28, at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway. Two local fiber artists Tess Melnick and Tanya Snodgrass will present a program on “ The Art of Unraveling and Transforming Knitted Garments .”
Their program is all about upcycling wool from sweaters and other knitted items. By sharing the techniques and systems they have learned over the past five years by unraveling enumerable sweaters, they have learned to make unraveling more accessible and less frustrating. Newcomers will learn this process, be more successful in reclaiming fibers for other purposes.
Everyone is welcome to bring a garment to deconstruct and samples will be provided as well. This is a great time to get assistance reclaiming wool from an old wool sweater or a project you have had in “hibernation”. Workshop participants will need to bring scissors, a seam ripper or thread clips, safety pins and something to wrap yarn on such as a paper towel roll, large wooden knitting needles or a nostepinne.”
Tanya Snodgrass loves the art of creating fabric, everything from costumes to clothing and home decor. Crocheting and sewing since she was 9, she has fell in love with knitting in the last 5 years. Recently she has also added weaving to her fiber art pursuits.
Tess Melnick is an artist and knitwear designer. She enjoys researching the art of knitting , learning about techniques passed down through generations from different parts of the world. Fiber art reflects each culture and binds people together. Her current interests involve Estonian knitting techniques, colorwork knitting, and learning to weave.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Visitors are invited to bring their latest fiber creations to share during the show and tell portion of the meeting.
Since 983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking,quilting, dyeing and more. The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts.
