Toothbrush Rugs at Fiber Guild Meeting

Make a Toothbrush Rug at Fiber Guild Meeting Fonda Haddad of Mims will present a program on Toothbrush Rugs at the January 24, 2026 meeting of the Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists: 10 a.m. at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N Courtenay Pkwy. A toothbrush rug is a durable handmade rug created by knotting fabric strips using a recycled toothbrush handle as a needle. This no-sew, reversible and washable rug is a great way to use fabric scraps. Although it looks like crocheted rugs, this is a different technique which involves knotting. There is a $10 supply fee for the workshop which includes cloth strips and a tooth brush needle. Bring a scissors. If you would rather do a crochet stitch, bring your own large crochet hook. Fonda Haddad is an outstanding fiber artist and instuctor who excels in dyeing and batik techniques, basketmaking, gourd craft, and various rug techniques including rug hooking. She has taught art at all levels including high school and college, and frequently conducts workshops at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown ,North Carolina. Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go-to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more. The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610. or visit https://www.spacecoastweaversandfiberartists.org/
