Nuno Felting Explained

The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet at 10 am on Saturday , April 22, at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway.Cindy Stroud of Melbourne  will demonstrate “Nuno Felting.”

Cindy is an accomplished felter.  Felting is an ancient process that creates a non-woven textile from wool or other animal fibers.  Using water, heat, agitation or a felting needle the action of felting binds fibers together creating a permanent , irreversible bond. Nuno felting incorporates a fabric such as silk with wool fiber. The fabric adds strength but also allows for very light weight and transparent creations.

Cindy Stroud took her first felt-making class in 2012 at the Tryon Arts and Craft School in North Carolina where she learned to make a small vessel. She was immediately attracted to the wonders and possibilities of molding wool fibers. Since that time, she has explored a vast array of techniques and materials in her felting journey. She has taken classes with many master felt-makers and developed her own style. Her preferred method is wet felting, using water, soap, and friction to transform fiber into solid form. She creates a wide range of products from light and delicate wearables to three dimensional sculptures.

Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more.  The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts.  Meetings are free and open to the public.  For more information call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610.
