OU Presidential Dream Course Public Lecture with Steven Nadler

Dr. Steven Nadler (University of Wisconsin-Madison) delivers the public lecture "Rembrandt and the Rabbi" for the OU Presidential Dream Course "The Artists' Bible: From Mosaics to Graphic Novels." For Zoom information, visit event website. Lecture Abstract: It has often been said that Rembrandt had a special sympathy for the Jewish people, and that he even had a close friend and collaborator among Amsterdam’s Portuguese Jews, a rabbi who lived in his neighborhood. In fact, he may have consulted Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel for help with one of his paintings, and the rabbi, in turn, may have commissioned from the artist several engravings for a Messianic book he was publishing. This lecture will consider facts and fictions about their relationship and the culture of 17th-century Amsterdam in which both art and Judaism flourished. About the Speaker: Steven Nadler is Vilas Research Professor and the William H. Hay II Professor of Philosophy and affiliate professor of art history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is currently director of the Institute for Research in the Humanities. He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Nadler has written prolifically on the cultural and philosophical efflorescence of the 17th-century Dutch Republic and the broader Enlightenment. Among these works, Rembrandt’s Jews (2003) was named as a finalist of the Pulitzer Prize. About the Schusterman Center for Judaic and Israel Studies at the University of Oklahoma: The Center is the largest home for its fields in the region. With six core faculty members and eighteen associated faculty members, it offers more than sixty courses as well undergraduate and graduate degrees. The center holds at least a dozen academic events every year, and awards thousands of dollars of scholarships to OU students studying in Norman and through Education Abroad. About the Presidential Dream Course Program: The Presidential Dream Course program was founded in 2004 by former University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren. This program enables faculty to bring scholars and world-renowned experts to campus to interact with OU students and give a public lecture to the local community. Presidential Dream Courses are allocated up to $20,000 to fund these special guest speakers.
