Dr. Samantha Baskind (Cleveland State University) delivers the public lecture "Archie Rand: When Comics Meet the Bible" for the OU Presidential Dream Course "The Artists' Bible: From Mosaics to Graphic Novels." For Zoom information, visit event website.
Lecture Abstract: Archie Rand's groundbreaking series Sixty Paintings from the Bible was his first on a Jewish theme painted in a comic book style. The work offers unexpected re-readings designed to make us rethink proverbial tales. At once irreverent and serious, Rand adds fresh perspectives to narratives which shaped Judaism as well as Western civilization. This talk explores how Rand's paintings update the Hebrew Bible’s archetypal stories about power, faith, humility, sexuality, and family dynamics for the modern day.
