Join us at the 1515 Lincoln Gallery for an all-day pop-up event, ‘;The Afghan Project,’ with Afghan entrepreneur Hasina Aimaq on Saturday, June 22nd from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. Since 2021 and the fall of Afghanistan to Taliban rule, the gallery has been working with Hasina on a collaborative project supporting Afghan entrepreneurs. Hasina will travel from her new home in Toronto to Oklahoma City on June 22nd for the pop-up show featuring jewelry, textiles, and clothing crafted by 13 women entrepreneurs still living in Afghanistan. The gallery will be carrying their work for sale in the gallery and the gallery’s online store. Hasina will be present on the 22nd to share her story of escape and ‘The Afghan Project’ during the pop-up show. All proceeds from sales support the women and their families.
About Hasina Aimaq
Hasina was born in Afghanistan and holds a position as a board member of the Afghan Women's Chamber of Commerce (AWCCI) as well as a member of Afghanistan's Chamber of Commerce. She earned a master's degree in business administration. Complementing her academic achievements, Hasina has extensive practical experience running her own business, Hasina Design, which has garnered numerous awards both in the USA and Afghanistan. Her designs have been showcased globally, including in Italy, Dubai, Tajikistan, India, and the USA.
Some of her notable accolades include:
● Enterprising Women of the Year Award, 2019, in Irving, Texas.
● Lifetime National Business Association Membership
● 40 Under 40 Award from Kardan University, recognizing exceptional students and alumni
under the age of 40
"I loved working with women in rural communities in Afghanistan. Having been one of them, I understand their struggles and challenges very well," Hasina says. Her interaction with these women and understanding of their challenges motivated her to work in the nonprofit sector, supporting women through economic empowerment programs with various national and international organizations. Her dedication to women's economic and social empowerment is evident through numerous initiatives, including the establishment of Nisfe Jahan (Half the World), a grassroots, membership-based association focused on sustainability and independence.
Before moving to Canada, Hasina's recent commitment was with Zardozi – Markets for Afghanistan, a local NGO supporting vulnerable women in overcoming gender barriers to start small businesses. By 2021, when the Taliban took over Kabul, she was the director of Zardozi, working with 6,000 women to help them take control of their lives and ensure their daughters received education. As a female leader, she faced death threats and knew the Taliban would target her. Fortunately, with the assistance of supportive Americans, she managed to flee Kabul with her family. While the escape was traumatic, she remains deeply grateful to Canada for welcoming them.
Upon arriving in Canada in September 2021, Hasina felt devastated, having lost her country and life as she knew it. "I felt I wouldn't be able to make a new life and start from the beginning," she recalls. However, her mother, a role model with her commitment and positive energy, inspired Hasina to embark on a new journey. Despite the ongoing challenges of piecing her life back together, she believes in never giving up and the power of hard work and self-confidence to overcome any obstacle.
