A unique collaboration between artists and an art therapist gives the Hampton Roads community the opportunity to participate in a free series of art-based workshops and experience an environmental art installation. Held at Norfolk Botanical Garden, each session of Visual Conversations: Art, Ecology, Healing begins with a 30-minute presentation by a regional expert on a topic related to the local environment. Following each presentation, participants will reflect through eco-art making and discussion facilitated by Dr. Mary Roberts from Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Counseling & Art Therapy at Old Dominion University.
In addition to the speaker series, artist and ODU professor Brendan Baylor and landscape designer Kelly Morse of 70|30 Design Studio have adapted their latest art installation to amplify the key messages of Visual Conversations. "Soundings: Soundmap for a Changing Landscape" is a pop-up gallery made from a decommissioned shipping container with a roof garden accessible by staircase. Within the gallery Baylor will use excerpts from the Visual Conversations: Art, Ecology, Healing series to create a new art piece.
Sessions and topics include:
Saturday, Sept 6, 2025-10:00am-12:00 pm: Environmental Justice with Kim Sudderth
Tuesday, Sept 9, 2025-5:30pm-7:30pm: Wetlands in Transition with Ian Blair
Saturday, Sept 20, 10:00am-12:00pm: Environmental Repair with Veronica Hicks
This project was made possible by a grant from the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience and additional funding from The Norfolk Botanical Garden and the Elizabeth River Trail.
