The Social and Public Art Resource center has been committed to the creation and development of public monuments in an effort to promote civic dialogue, address critical social issues, and help foster cross-cultural understanding. In service of creating a community space in which artists can hone and develop skills, it is offering "Ritual Workshop: Giving Thanks to Mother Earth Through Ofrenda and Art," a free workshop where SPARC is providing all art supplies. Participants are only asked to bring fruit and any other items they would like to use for the "ofrenda" ritual.
There is a long and geographically widespread tradition of community rituals in agriculture, many of these rituals are still used in ceremonies throughout the world today. With the purpose of restoring an ancient pre-Hispanic ritual of invoking the four directions, in this family-friendly workshop, participants will learn an ancient ritual to Mother Earth and then create a still life drawing. The "ofrendas" will consist of fruit and flowers; this simple ritual marks the beginning of the rainy season and offers the opportunity to express our connection and healing wishes for Mother Earth through art.
