Why a National Park and Preserve?

The Friends of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area are pleased to announce that John Donahue, a former superintendent of the Park and leading advocate for making the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA) into the Delaware River National Park and Lenape Preserve, will speak on the reasons he supports the changing the designation of National Recreation Area to a National Park and Preserve on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at 6:30 pm. This event was changed to a free online event. Register to receive a link to the event. Our Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has been overrun in the last two years with much expanded visitation that is taxing the current park personnel and is pushing the resources needed to maintain the infrastructure of the park. Our Park is among the topmost-visited National Park Service holdings in one of the most densely populated parts of the country. Could restructuring and redesignating our Park as the Delaware River National Park and Lenape Preserve be a solution?
This is your opportunity to hear the proposal being made for a National Park and Preserve; not only why, but who is making the proposal? John Donahue served as the Park's superintendent in past years and has stayed in the area to further support the conservation and preservation of our natural resources of the area. There will be time after John's presentation for an open QandA session.
The Friends of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is not-for-profit park conservancy group. Our mission is to foster and support the historical, scientific, educational, interpretive, recreational and natural resource management activities of the park.
