On Tuesday, February 27th, 6:30pm - 9:00pm, we are proud to present a reading of a new contemporary play in celebration of this year’s Black History Month theme, “African Americans and the Arts”, written and performed by legendary theatre artist Thurman E. Scott, whose mentor Stella Adler called, “The inheritor of my legacy and the Stanislavski legacy.”
We Are One is about people from different backgrounds trying to come together. Set in the community of Harlem, which is emblematic of the world, We Are One focuses on the conversations taking place among the local church congregation about prejudice, violence, and the human experience. These conversations are intermingled with scenes of stark, emotional current and historic experiences of life lived with neighbors and the barriers that divide us.
The Black church has historically been a sanctuary for the community and at the center of the struggle for civil rights and acceptance. As the Harlem community continues expanding and shifting, it is now serving a more diverse population. This play examines why we have biases and how we live out our thoughts, both positive and negative. It speaks to the barriers that divide us and explores techniques to overcome those barriers. Most important, it gives the audience new insights about why we feel we can’t come together, and ways to build an automatic connection so that we can truly “be one”.
Join us for a powerful artistic evening as we examine and address the reality of what is happening today, and exchange ideas with empathy and honesty.
We Are One is part of ATW’s ongoing Play Reading and Discussion Series, which presents readings of essays and new plays by emerging and established playwrights, along with classic American plays by playwrights such as Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams. ATW offers a vibrant, safe, creative space for playwrights, performers, and audience members to explore universal, timely issues our society is grappling with – from the toll of racism and attempts to suppress history, to drug addiction and economic inequality, to the role of truth in democracy – and confront them with honesty and compassion to move us forward.
After the reading, we will have an active audience discussion. Light refreshments will be provided.
Please note: We Are One discusses the universality of the effects of violence and includes references to trauma that could be triggering for: slavery, murder, and violence.
