Smartphone Alternative Device Fair
(Montclair, NJ) – Thinking about purchasing a phone or watch for your child? Don’t know where to start? Screen Aware Montclair, in partnership with Renaissance Middle School PTA, is thrilled to invite families of all ages to Montclair’s first ever Smartphone Alternative Device Fair. Parents can view and test products while speaking to the creators and tech experts of kid-safe and teen-safe devices.
Parents are struggling with managing their children's digital worlds, including: excessive screen time, social media, access to inappropriate content, and more. With the desire to delay social media and give their kids more “real world” independence, families are searching for the right balance of communication in the modern age while limiting the dangers associated with traditional smartphones.
Screen Aware Montclair, in Montclair, NJ, is taking a positive, proactive approach to helping spread awareness about alternative cell phone options. Smartphone alternatives have evolved over the past decade beyond the common flip phone. Companies like Bark, Troomi, Pinwheel, Gabb, and MMGuardian are giving parents the tools to safely manage their children’s digital world. Learn how these devices safely let kids talk and text with approved contacts, include GPS tracking, send parent alerts for violent, sexual, or self-harm content, and blur out nude photos or videos. Smartphone alternatives are part of a “Tech-in Steps” movement, where that parents can customize their child’s tech as they grow.
Screen Aware Montclair is a parent-led group committed to raising awareness about social media, smartphones, and its effect on mental health. Through parent education sessions, panel discussions, meetings, and events, Screen Aware Montclair helps families navigate tech safe choices for their kids from smartphone alternative options to internet safety.
