When Lily and Alex entered a packed gymÂnaÂsiÂum in Queens, New York in 1972, they bareÂly recÂogÂnized their son. The boy who escaped to AmerÂiÂca with them, who was bulÂlied as he strugÂgled to learn EngÂlish and cope with famÂiÂly tragedy, was now a young man who had disÂcovÂered and secretÂly honed his basÂketÂball talÂent on the outÂdoor courts of New York City. That young man was Ernie GrunÂfeld, who would go on to win an Olympic gold medal and reach preÂviÂousÂly unimagÂinÂable heights as an NBA playÂer and execÂuÂtive. In By the Grace of the Game, Dan GrunÂfeld, once a basÂketÂball standÂout himÂself at StanÂford UniÂverÂsiÂty, shares the remarkÂable stoÂry of his famÂiÂly, a delÂiÂcateÂly interÂwoÂven narÂraÂtive that doesn’t lack in heartÂbreak yet remains as deeply nourÂishÂing as his grandmother’s HunÂgarÂiÂan cookÂing, so lovÂingÂly described. The true improbÂaÂbilÂiÂty of the saga lies in the disÂcovÂery of a game that unknowÂingÂly held the powÂer to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie togethÂer a fracÂtured JewÂish family.
