The second installment of a three part series of the Rhizome Project’s speaker series for Black History Month, Rhizome Voice is curated by Queens based artist and activist Trasonia Abbott (@trasonia_abbott).
2020 was a year for the books. Between the global pandemic altering the way we interact, the historically prolonged protests in support of the Movement for Black Lives, and growing divisive rhetoric culminating in a broadcasted inaugural insurrection - the year is ripe with fodder to be gleaned for inspiration. It is important that open discussions take place for inspiration to give way to change.
At this moment we, as Black artists, find ourselves at a crossroads with the choice of deciding where the center of gravity for Black art is to be. Long standing creative institutions have clear advantages, but they often present implicit bias and challenges specific to BIPOC artists. How do we navigate institutional spaces and create new sustainable alternatives in the wake of the recent climatic upturning of the status quo?
Join as Curator and Facilitator Trasonia Abbott opens space for artists Jonell Joshua (@jonell.joshua) and Felicia Holman (@feliciaholman) - both of whom have created in various sectors of the art world, to discuss their experiences. The conversation will begin to unpack what it means to work within the creative institutional system as Black artists, how it affects their practice and strategies employed to navigate in and out of institutional creative spaces.
