DENNIS LICHTMAN
Art Exhibit by Berdscarnival (Maraya Lopez)
Dennis Lichtman is a multi-instrumentalist who is equally at home on clarinet, mandolin, and fiddle. He is deeply entrenched in the early years of jazz and its connections to other American roots genres, from ragtime to bluegrass to western swing (and most importantly, the meeting-points in between). His long-running weekly Tuesday night jam session at Mona’s in New York City has been called “ground zero for an emerging late-night scene of young swing and traditional jazz players” by the Wall Street Journal. Dennis has performed and recorded as a member of The Lovestruck Balladeers, Ghost Train Orchestra, Pokey LaFarge Band, Nation Beat, Jim Kweskin Band, duo with Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, and many more in addition to his own projects, The Brain Cloud and Mona’s Hot Four.
Berdscarnival (Maraya Lopez) lives and works in New York. She earned an MFA in Painting/Sculpture from Pratt Institute in 2010. She was born and raised in West Texas. The forlorn expansive plains of Lubbock still influence her work today. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group and collaborative exhibitions in Texas and in New York City at Gallery 76102; Arlington, Texas in 2010; The Painting Center, New York City in 2012; Momenta Gallery, Brooklyn, NY in 2015; A.I.R. Gallery, Dumbo, New York in 2017; Flux Factory, Queens, New York in 2017; and the Whitney Museum of Art, New York in 2017. Furthermore, she has collaborated with numerous artists and groups throughout her career including Occupy Museums (OM), Brooklyn based artist Noah Fischer (OM’s initiator) and Marilyn Jolly of Dallas, Texas. In 2012, OM traveled to Berlin, Germany to exhibit in the 7th Berlin, Biennial. Maraya splits her time between her on-site studio in Dumbo and her job as a security guard at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
