Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration

“Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration” considers the foundational roots of confinement from an art historical perspective to better understand the fact that today’s mass incarceration crisis is centuries in the making. The exhibition explores how images throughout time contribute to entrenched cultural beliefs associated with today’s carceral system and includes 12 commissioned artworks from nationally acclaimed contemporary artists whose work combines history, research and storytelling in material form. The exhibit also features work from local artists and will host a number of engaging activities for public participation throughout the run of the show. “Undoing Time” will open April 1st, 2023 with a weekend full of activities, starting with an opening night celebration during The Arts District New Orleans First Saturday Art Walk. Admission is at no charge for all Louisiana Residents during FREE Sundays at CAC sponsored by The Helis Foundation. “Undoing Time” was originally organized by Miki Garcia, ASU Art Museum director; Heather Sealy Lineberry, ASU curator emeritus; Matthew Villar Miranda, ASU-LACMA Fellow; and Julio César Morales, ASU senior curator, and features artists; Carolina Aranibar-Fernández, Juan Brenner, Sandra de la Loza, Ashley Hunt, Raven Chacon, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Michael Rohd, Paul Rucker, Xaviera Simmons, Stephanie Syjuco, Vincent Valdez and Mario Ybarra Jr. The artists in the exhibition invest in community collaboration, work in an expansive range of media and rethink traditional archival research to consider how artistic expression reveals the underlying logics of criminality and correction. Miki Garcia says, “This exhibition was inspired by filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s strategy in her documentary “13th,” which uses history as a lens to understand present-day phenomena and as a way to trace how legacies of the past persist to this day.” This nationally-touring exhibition will also feature New Orleans based artists kai lumumba barrow, Daryl Falls, Jarrel Hamilton and Bianca Walker. “The CAC is uniquely positioned to advance the creative work of artists exploring today's most pressing social and environmental issues,” says CAC Executive Director, George Scheer. “We do this work in concert with a community deeply invested in addressing the many related inequities. The desired impact of our Inter[SECTOR] program is to bring artists, together with community activists, into the foreground of a larger civic conversation.” Inter[SECTOR] is the CAC's multidisciplinary program that is focused on cross-sector engagements between visual and performing artists and activists in the community who are working in the areas of carceral justice, healthcare, and the environment. “With ‘Undoing Time,’ we continue our commitment to cross-sector engagement, presenting works by exceptional national artists that reflect on the systemic implications of incarceration and the role that art history and western cultural power have played in advancing the carceral state.” The CAC presentation of “Undoing Time: The Art & Histories of Incarceration” is made possible through the generous support of the Art for Justice Fund, a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors; The Andrew Mellon Foundation; The Helis Foundation; and Louisiana Office of Cultural Development, Division of the Arts and in partnership with the Arizona State University Art Museum.
