Engaging Communities Through Literature - Stephanie Dray Book Talk

The Griswold Inn's Wine Bar & Bistro will be hosting a book talk and signing, Featuring guest speaker Stephanie Dray, New York Times best-selling author. Dray will join us to discuss her latest work of historical fiction, Becoming Madam Secretary. The story depicts a fictional biography of the life of Frances Perkins, the first woman to ever serve in a presidential cabinet. Dray’s new work has received high praise for her evident admiration and respect for the American heroine as well as her impeccable research and historical accuracy. About the book: Raised on tales of her revolutionary ancestors, Frances Perkins arrives in New York City at the turn of the century, armed with her trusty parasol and an unyielding determination to make a difference. When she’s not working with children in the crowded tenements in Hell’s Kitchen, Francis throws herself into the social scene in Greenwich Village, befriending the flirtatious budding author Sinclair Lewis, and the brilliant but troubled reformer Paul Wilson, with whom she falls deeply in love. But when Frances meets a young lawyer named Franklin Delano Roosevelt at a tea dance, sparks fly in all the wrong directions. Neither knows it yet, but over the next twenty years, they will form a historic partnership that will carry them both to the White House. Frances is destined to rise in a political world dominated by men, facing down the Great Depression as FDR’s most trusted lieutenant - even as she struggles to balance the demands of a public career with marriage and motherhood... she must decide what she’s willing to do - and what she’s willing to sacrifice - to save a nation. The cost for attending the event is the purchase of the book through the Store, Goods & Curiosities, which will serve as your “ticket” and reserve your seat. You may purchase your copy at the 47 Main Street, Essex, CT store - directly across from the Main Inn - or purchase the book online at The Griswold Inn website https://store.griswoldinn.com/ where your copy of the book will be held until the event date.
