On February 22, 2024, Laken Riley was brutally killed on the University of Georgia's campus while on a jog. It was a crime of convenience in which a man took advantage of a woman who was alone. Unfortunately, this is nothing new. Violence on college campuses is a growing problem, and women are typically the victims. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted while attending college. These statistics are staggering. Women should leave for college excited about their future. Mothers should have no fear that their daughters won't make it home safely at night. Friends shouldn't have to track their friends' location to make sure they are safe. And yet, this is the reality. With problems like this, it seems like there is nothing you can do to help.
That is why Empower Her was started at Franklin High School. Empower her is a club that works to end violence against women, particularly working with domestic and sexual violence. Empower Her has organized this 5k to remember Laken Riley and prevent such violence from continuing. All the proceeds will go to Futures Without Violence's college and university program. Futures Without Violence is a nonprofit that works to create healthy communities without violence.
Admission will be $5; cash and Venmo will be accepted at the run. We hope to see you there. Thank you!
