African Americans have fought in every war and continue to fight for a country that has always seemed to undervalue their contributions. Many may learned about Crispus Attacks and the Revolutionary War. He was an African American and said to be the first to die in the Revolutionary War. However, Crispus Attacks was one of thousands of free and enslaved African Americans that fought on both sides of the war: they fought for the Colonials (Patriots), as well as for the British. In both cases, the enslaved African Americans were promised freedom if they served. This promise was kept in some cases, but not all. This exhibit depicts stories of those who fought and highlights the true story of Jocko, the lawn jockey.
