HACKERS

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. 1995. NEW YORK. CYBERSPACE. High school. The 1990s were truly a special time. The burgeoning promise of the internet connecting people across the globe opened the door for more experimentation and cross-cultural creation. Social media had yet to ruin our lives, Amazon was a quaint little start-up selling books, and The X-Files was must-see TV. HACKERS is quintessential '90s schlock that some would call “bad,” and I would call that “homophobic.” Everyone in this damn movie is serving high-key non-binary charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. Okay, wait, let's talk about the plot. At just 11 years old, Dade “Zero Cool” Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller) infamously hacked over 1,500 computer systems and crashed the stock market. After his 18th birthday, Dade's “don’t touch computers” probation is lifted and he immediately returns to hacking the house down boots with his new NYC hacker community, including Acid Burn (Angelina Jolie), Cereal Killer (Matthew Lillard), Phantom Phreak (Renoly Santiago), Lord Nikon (Laurence Mason), and novice Joey (Jesse Bradford). As the crew attempts to “hack the planet,” they are pursued by former hacker-turned-sell-out sleaze The Plague (Fisher Stevens) and US Secret Service Agent Dick Gill (Wendell Pierce) for dubiously explained reasons. Also, Mark Anthony is here, apparently? Dismissed in its time, HACKERS has gone on to develop a cult following of mostly queer fans, and it is the perfect summer film to usher in the new school year at Queer Film Theory 101.
