Many Hands Many Meals is nearing its ten millionth meal packed in its history and is on schedule to hit that milestone during the next year. This year’s biggest event will be held Nov. 10-11th, with hundreds of volunteers of all ages coming together to pack more than 350,000 life-saving meals. The meals are going to Sierra Leone, where 66 percent of children live in poverty, according to UNICEF. Sign up with your friends, family, neighborhoods, teams, scouts, co-workers or clubs! All ages are welcome! 2 hours of time can do so much for so many. Feel the love! “Healthy meals are fundamental to empowering people to contribute to their communities,” says Sarah Johnson, MHMM board member. “You can’t function if you’re hungry. Basic needs must be met so children can go to school, contribute, and grow.” MHMM partners with Children of the Nations to deliver meals where they’re needed most. The ultimate goal is to create self-sustaining communities that can provide food for themselves. In the meantime, packaged meals provide the calories, protein, vitamins, and nutrients needed not only to survive, but to thrive. At the same time, packaging meals provides an opportunity for the local west metro community, particularly young people, to learn about the value of volunteering and helping others. “I love the feeling of community and the high energy at the Packathon,” says Todd Hofstad, member of the MHMM board. “It’s such a good learning experience for the young people and the adults with them. It’s great to bring everyone together over this common goal.” At the event, volunteers scoop, weigh, and seal meals made of rice, soy, dried vegetables, and a flavor-vitamin blend. MHMM has been packing meals for 19 years, with food sent to places including Haiti, Tanzania, Malawi, and areas of the U.S. affected by poverty, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. There are three main ways people can support the Packathon: Purchasing ingredients/ Sponsoring a Station | Supplies are not donated, rather they must be purchased.
