Saddle up and head out west to Walnut Hill on Friday, March 20 as we highlight the Black Cowboys of Milwaukee who are preserving and growing cowboy culture right here in our hometown. We will hear from: Brandon Hobson • Elijah "E" Fife • James Jones • Kevin Nichols Mack Kirksey • Marnix "Doc" Stamps • Matthew Finnie • Percy Evans Brandon, "E," James, Kevin, Mack, "Doc," Matthew and Percy will talk about how horsemanship has shaped their lives, and what current efforts they are championing throughout Milwaukee and Wisconsin to introduce youth and adults to experiences within the agricultural industry. Broadly, the Black Cowboy Coalition is a national organization that offers hands-on experiences and flexible frameworks to enlighten individuals about cowboy culture, horsemanship, ranching, farming and sustainability efforts in their local communities. Members of this local Milwaukee panel are from the Buffalo Soldiers and the Silverado Trail Riders. Through riding, teaching, organizing and showing up for the next generation, these men are using cowboy culture as a tool for discipline, connection and pride. For many of the Black cowboys, horsemanship is more than a hobby – it’s a way of life that has shaped their character, strengthened their leadership and deepened their roots in Milwaukee. Our theme for March is Local. It was chosen by our Santos chapter in Brazil and illustrated by Simone Matias. Local (pronounced lo·cal) in Portuguese means “being a resident or native to a particular area.” Our Santos chapter had this to say about the significance of this month's theme: “We are proud to be from Santos. The feeling of loving the city — but sometimes moving away. The benefits of belonging somewhere.” So, how does where you’re from define who you are? How do different spaces foster that sense of connection? How can we develop and strengthen bonds with the people around us? It’s time to remind ourselves that community happens in neighborhoods not just on screens.
