Pope Francis & The Two Leos: A Vision for Global Economic Justice
As Pope Francis’s newly-elected, successor, Pope Leo XIV assumes the mantle of the only figure on the world stage offering a coherent, human alternative to the disfigured economic and political culture of authoritarianism. In choosing his name, Leo has signaled his intention to continue the work of Pope Leo XIII, who forged Catholic Social Doctrine in critique of both Marxism and capitalism amidst the rapid industrialization of the late 19th Century.
In our time together, we will explore the following questions: could our own age of AI-related employment upheaval echo the times of Leo XIII? How will the Church’s principles of economic justice guide Pope Leo XIV in walking a new path toward true progress in a time of great economic and political uncertainty? How might Leo’s explicit commitment to Francis’s vision establish new social teaching built for our new, strange world of the future?
