KASE & Hannah Johnson and Her Trio

See jazz a little bit differently with KASE & Hannah Johnson and Her Trio during Jean's Jazz on Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Racine Theatre Guild. Unlike the Classical player, the jazz artist must achieve a technique that uncovers the self, that answers the question that Ellison says is the question of American art: Who am I? Led by Jamie Breiwick on trumpet/electronics, John Christensen on bass, and Jordan Lee on turntables and electronics, KASE will be inventing textural soundscapes. Incorporating live beats, turntablism, electronic elements, and extended improvisations into the music we create. References for this project run the gamut from the contemporary mainstream to the avant guard to the classic, mixing jazz & hiphop is like mixing jazz and jazz – different branches of the same tree. They create something new and unexpected through this band and invite you to join on that journey. Hannah Johnson provides an adventurous and joyful approach to her musical endeavors. Hannah’s desire to express herself in various genres keeps her busy composing and playing drums within the jazz idiom. Her awe of rhythm, emotive harmonic structures and a touch of chaos drive her musical approach. Her quartet, Heirloom, recently released their debut album on Shifting Paradigm Records entitled Familiar Beginnings. Within her trio, Hannah, Russ and Tim journey through a communal trove of original compositions. While their personalities remain distinct, there is an alluring ease to their interconnectivity. She has performed with international artists including Rob Clearfield, Dayna Stephens, Geof Bradfield, and Sharel Cassidy. In 2001, Joe Mooney created the Jean’s Jazz Series in memory of his wife, Jean, who passed away from ovarian cancer. Since then, over 25,000 people have attended our concerts, grossing over $140,000 to benefit the Racine Theatre Guild. Jean’s love of the Theatre Guild and her love of Jazz inspired a series that has truly enriched the community. Tickets are $20 – Adults, $18 – Seniors (62+), and $5 – Students (21 and under).
