The Kyiv Grand Ballet proudly presents the North American Premiere of a unique ballet collaboration between choreographer Alexander Abdukarimov and Finnish composer Tuomas Kantelinen.Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is a timeless fairytale about never-ending love and friendship that win over the most terrifying of obstacles. In the story of The Snow Queen a little boy named Kai and a little girl called Gerda live next door to each other and are best friends. Kai's grandmother tells the children about the Snow Queen, who rules over the snowflakes and the Arctic areas. She also tells the tale of an evil troll, who made a magic mirror that distorts the appearance of everything it reflects. It fails to reflect the good and beautiful aspects of people and things, while magnifying their bad and ugly aspects.Unfortunately, splinters of the troll mirror get into Kai's heart and eyes, he becomes cruel and aggressive, and answers to Snow Queen’s beckoning by following her to her frozen castle, mesmerised by her icy beauty and malevolent powers. Gerda is devastated to have lost her best friend, and embarks on an eventful journey to free Kai from the Snow Queen’s clutches - and while at times all seems lost, in true fairytale tradition the story heads towards a happy ending, that bring the friends back together and destroys the evil empire of the Snow Queen. Trolls, robbers, snowflakes, palace courtiers, cunning and amusing forest creatures - this colorful journey full of dangers and obstacles, shown through the beauty and aesthetics of the classical traditional ballet will bring everyone to a winter festive mood.In a classic tale of good versus evil, we hear the lush orchestral composition of Tuomas Kantelinen, played by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
