Chicago Drummer Gustavo Cortiñas at the Jazz Gallery
The Cortiñas quartet, Entre Amigos (“Between Friends”), will be rounded out by a superb group of veteran musicians: Mark Feldman on violin, Jon Irabagon on sax, and Dave Miller playing guitar.
Embracing a multicultural language, while investing in a variety of disciplines within the music itself, Mexican-born drummer, composer, and producer Gustavo Cortiñas has proven to be a dynamic and melodic artist, committed to building empathy and understanding through music.
Modern Drummer magazine said: ”Cortiñas’ music is bluesy and deeply felt...sometimes it is raucus, sometimes solemn, but the music is always drenched in emotion.”
Cortiñas will appear at the JGCA in support of his recently released sixth album as a leader, The Crisis Knows No Borders. The album’s songs have been inspired by global climate change and its far-reaching socio-political implications, which transcend borders and manifest in often tragic humanitarian crises.
Downbeat magazine praised Cortiñas thusly: “Cortiñas’ music is uplifting, robust, melodic, and gets your body moving; it’s an exciting blend of the artist’s musical influences from jazz and Latin America, including his native Mexico.”
