Optimist will also stage the first-ever Milwaukee Shakespeare Festival at Forest Home Cemetery in August.
Four theatre companies will perform two of Shakespeare’s works and two original pieces. SitP alum Libby Amato will star in a single-actor performance of Hamlet, and the Pocket Park Puppet Players present Macbeth as can only be accomplished by puppets.
Alongside these classics, Optimist will present “Another Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Milwaukee Playwright Liz Shipe, and The Comedy of Romeo and Juliet: Kinda Sorta, a modern-ish comedic take on the star-crossed lovers, written and directed by Patrick Schmitz aand starring The Schmitz 'n Giggles Shakesparody Players.
This year’s touring company will perform in seventeen public parks and greenspaces. The schedule includes four days of performances each at Lincoln Park and Sherman Park on Milwaukee’s North side, two days at Grant Park in South Milwaukee, marking Optimist’s debut in Grant Park. The company is excited to return to Humboldt Park in Bay View for two days of performance. This season will see Shakespeare brought to new neighborhoods and pocket parks, with performances slated at the Garden District Community Garden, S. 6th Street and W. Howard Avenue, at Honey Creek Park in West Allis, and at Walker Square Park and Clarke Square Park on Milwaukee’s South Side. Optimist will also present Shakespeare-focused theatre games and workshops with The PLAY’s the Thing.
