Dominoes for Education
Key Biscayne residents are invited to join the community in raising funds for the Liberty City Scholarship Fund through the magic and fun of dominoes. Participants can enjoy a tropical evening filled with traditional Cuban traditions at the Key Biscayne Beach Club, complete with an open mojito bar, live music, and–of course–dominoes. While guests compete in a light-hearted double-nine domino tournament, the proceeds from their tickets will go towards the Liberty City Scholarship Fund at Miami Dade College.
Key Biscayne resident and philanthropist Toby Rohrer, who is deeply involved in the program, explains that the initiative is intended to help Key Biscayne’s over the bridge “Sister City,” Liberty City.
“The idea is to educate the students and give them a shot to go into school. Miami Dade College has such a range of programs from a certificate degree to a four year degree that the kids can really find a way to improve the lives of their families.”
Rohrer emphasized the importance of community participation in the event and offered a myriad of personal stories impacted forever by the scholarship fund. From entertainment manager to boutique owner, the scholarship enables those to pursue their dreams without financial burden.
“There are people in different areas of life who just need a hand and the opportunity. It’s not the money, it’s the fact that they needed to learn and take classes to learn some skills that could help them in their careers.”
The event is held in partnership with the Liberty City Scholarship Fund at Miami Dade College and the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne. The Key Biscayne Community Foundation is fiscally supporting the event.
