The Holiday Spirit: Voices and Brass
(Mesa, AZ) Welcome the holidays with the brilliance of voices, brass, and organ. Thrill to John Rutter’s Gloria and Randall Stroope’s Hodie (This Day!). Revel in the season’s cheer with traditional carols and holiday favorites, including some jazz scoring.
The Holiday Spirit: Voices and Brass performances are set for Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, 15 E. First Avenue, Mesa and Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 3:00 P.M. at La Casa De Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale.
Single tickets are $25 for adults/$20 for seniors, students, and groups of 10 or more. Tickets may be purchased online at SonoranDesertChorale.org, by calling 480-305-4538, from singers, or at the door. Student Rush tickets are available ten minutes before curtain with appropriate ID.
John Rutter’s Gloria has been enormously–and justifiably–popular ever since its premiere in 1974. And it’s hard not to get caught up in the overall excitement–Rutter ideally captures the festive, celebratory nature of these texts while offering plenty of his signature melodies, catchy rhythmic structures, and vibrant orchestration, involving powerfully expressive brass, percussion, and organ.
Arranger Howard Helvey plays with listeners’ expectations as he adds extra beats and irregular meter to the familiar melody of Ding dong! Merrily on high, and provides rich jazzy harmony in up to nine parts. This is a truly fun arrangement that will surprise and delight. Other familiar tunes include Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, The First Noel, and the beautiful Candlelight Carol.
