1489 (2023, Shoghakat Vardanyan) | A film screening and discussion

Film title - 1489 "In 2020, simmering tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted in the border region of Nagorno- Karabakh. Shoghakat Vardanyan’s brother Soghomon disappeared on the seventh day of the six-week-long war, leaving behind only the designation '1489'— the number assigned to 'body of an individual missing in action.' Vardanyan’s response was to use her phone camera to film every moment of the agonizing wait that ensued. She documents her parents and herself as they search for answers, interviewing soldiers who survived, desperately clinging to hope, and their grief as hope begins to fade. Through raw, intimate moments, 1489 confronts the human cost of war through one family’s unwavering love, quest for closure, and finally, their acceptance of a devastating truth. This deeply personal film is by a first-time filmmaker." https://www.fullframefest.org/film/1489/ The screening will be followed by a conversation featuring: director Shoghakat Vardanyan (remotely); along with Hovig Artinian, (SHESC); Setrag Hovsepian, (MLFC); Irina Levin, (BHC); and Keith Brown (SPGS/Melikian). The discussion will be facilitated by Luiza Parvu and Toma Peiu (Poitier Film School). In 2025, Kino Nights features bold films that address personal and collective trauma. Our line-up includes documentary and fiction films that touch on historical events that have left scars in the consciousness of the filmmakers, and their audiences. The works we present go beyond the descriptive to evoke the unthinkable and process the shock and horror without exploiting it, by using a distinct cinematic language. They create sensory experiences, spaces of shared imagination and affect that put audiences in fellowship with people, places and events of rupture, punctuated by violence, genocide, or catastrophe that reverberate long after they have unfolded.
