Adelphi Orchestra Opens 73rd Season: American Voice at 250
Celebrate America's 250th anniversary with the Adelphi Orchestra as Northern New Jersey’s longest continuously performing chamber orchestra triumphantly opens its milestone 73rd consecutive season! Under the baton of distinguished Principal Conductor Kyunghun Kim, this celebratory concert series—titled "American Voice at 250"—brings together monumental works from the American orchestral canon alongside one of the greatest classical symphonies ever written.
This opening program honors America's semiquincentennial by examining the depth, passion, and emotional breadth of the American musical heritage. The concerts will take place across two premier tri-state cultural venues: Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the state-of-the-art Fair Lawn Community Center Theater in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, followed by Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the historic Broadway Presbyterian Church in New York City.
THE MUSIC & PROGRAM
The afternoon begins with Samuel Barber’s universally revered Adagio for Strings, Op. 11. Originally composed in 1936, this deeply moving work has grown to become America’s quintessential anthem of reflection, hope, and solemn beauty. Characterized by its arching melodies and gradual, luminous build to a devastating peak of intensity, the Adagio for Strings stands as one of the most recognizable and profound pieces in the entire orchestral literature.
Continuing the celebration of American genius, the orchestra welcomes acclaimed guest violinist Sophia Werner to perform Samuel Barber’s extraordinary Violin Concerto, Op. 14. Written between 1939 and 1940, the concerto captures two contrasting facets of Barber's artistic voice: the first two movements feature sweeping lyrical beauty, rich harmonies, and soaring Romantic warmth, while the famous finale (Presto in moto perpetuo) explodes into a breathless, virtuosic display of rhythmic drive and technical brilliance. Sophia Werner—a Juilliard Kovner Fellow and the winner of the 2022 Adelphi Young Artist Competition—returns to the Adelphi stage to lend her phenomenal artistry and technique to this cornerstone of American concert literature.
To conclude this landmark program, Conductor Kyunghun Kim leads the Adelphi Orchestra in Ludwig van Beethoven’s exuberant Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93. Often described by Beethoven himself as his "little Symphony in F," the Eighth Symphony is a masterpiece of classical wit, rhythmic energy, and joyful brilliance. Written during a period of intense personal change for the composer, the work bursts with humor, playful thematic dialogue, and unexpected dynamic contrasts. From its spirited opening movement to the brilliant, lightning-fast finale, Beethoven’s Eighth offers a triumphant and uplifting conclusion to an unforgettable afternoon of live music.
