New York–based Korean artist Kim Kimin presents a solo exhibition, Starstretched, in New Jersey.

In this exhibition, Kim focuses on drawing as a condensed form of painterly exploration and improvisation. The works are presented as an archive, offering a collection of experimental and expressive pieces that reflect the artist’s intuitive approach. For Kim, drawing serves not only as a precursor to painting but also as a medium with its own autonomous identity. Rooted in the literary metaphors found in 20th-century Korean poetry anthologies, Kim interprets painting as an intuitive act aimed at comfort and restoration. Acts such as drawing lines and brushstrokes become ritualistic gestures—tools for navigating sorrow, healing, and emotional resonance with cultural memory. Referencing Korean shamanic rituals, traditional funeral practices, and ancient burial customs in which petals were used to cover the deceased, Kim treats the figures that appear in her paintings as both symbolic vessels and ritualistic objects. Through this layered approach, her work embodies a poetic meditation on mourning and remembrance. Starstretched invites viewers to reflect on emotion, memory, and cultural heritage through the slow, physical act of painting—offering a contemplative pause in an age dominated by speed and digital technology. Kim Kimin is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has held multiple solo exhibitions in both Korea and the United States. She has been invited to participate in the 2025 residency program at the New York Art Residency and Studios Foundation (NARS).
