Madison Bach Musicians’ season opens on October 4 & 5 in the beautiful setting of Holy Wisdom Monastery with a thrilling program of Classical Symphonies Storm & Stress ... Sunny Lyricism ... the Daring Turn. Internationally renowned violinist Marc Destrubé—who led MBM season-opening concerts in 2023 (Vivaldi’s Venice) and 2024 (The French Baroque Style)—will return to direct symphonic masterworks by Joseph Haydn, Luigi Boccherini, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. From Haydn we’ll hear the tempestuous symphonies No. 49 in F minor and No. 52 in C minor—both in the Storm and Stress style (Sturm und Drang) which was all the rage in the 1760s and early 1770s when Haydn composed these works for his virtuoso orchestra at the Esterhazy palace. Boccherini’s Symphony in A major will serenade us with its Sunny Lyricism—one happy Italian tune after another, all elegantly quilted together. And from C. P. E. Bach (J. S. Bach’s immensely talented and innovative son), we’ll hear the audacious Symphony in E-flat major, a fascinating emotional rollercoaster, full of Daring Turns of phrase. C. P. E. was famous for his consummate skill in juggling disparate musical materials.
For this program, MBM will field a complete Classical-period chamber orchestra: violins, violas, cellos, and bass, strung with gut and played with period bows, harpsichord continuo, Classical oboes (different in design and sound from Baroque and modern oboes), and valveless horns with their gorgeous open sound evocative of the great outdoors where they had been played for centuries before being imported into concert halls in the 18th century.
We hope to see you at the concerts!
