A workshop for people considering free lance, independent contractor, or ‘gig’ work as opposed to regular employment position.
Freelancers or gig workers can do it on their own or thru a placement firm. Gig contractors or ‘body shops’, sometimes called ‘lease worker firms’ are companies that recruit specialized technical or other workers in order to contract their services out on tactical short or mid-term basis to business clients. Gig workers are independent contractors to a staff augmentation firm and as such do not receive a salary, benefits or other typical employee considerations. Yet many people, usually in the engineering, bio-science, information technology arena or specialized sales prefer gig work over standard employee roles.
There are many reasons why some workers prefer a gig arrangement over full time regular employment. For example, they’ve become bored with their current position; got caught in a Covid cut back; or have been in job search mode for many months and have an acute need for income to pay bills. With gig work they may see a higher rate of hourly pay and no limit to how much they can earn. As a gig consultant they may be attracted to the independence of working for themselves, control of their own destiny, and working from home that eliminates an arduous commute. In addition the recent COVID pandemic has further pushed more firms and individuals towards gig arrangements.
Gig or freelanced project work can offer these advantages but there are many potential pitfalls you should consider. This workshop will present both the potential rewards and the risks of moving into a full time gig worker role. It will present a checklist on how to choose the right ‘body shop’, assess whether moving into a gig role is a good fit for you, and it will present ways to protect yourself from being taken advantage by less than ethical lease worker firms.
Topics to be covered are:
- What are critical questions you should address before moving into gig work or consulting?
- What are the right and wrong reasons to jump into gig work and leave full time employment?
- Body shop recruiters, how to separate fact from fiction.
- Leverage, how much do you have, and how to use it.
- How to protect your interests negotiating gig work contracts and agreements, what to expect, do's and don'ts.
- What questions must you ask in order to see if you are a fit for a particular firm?
- What personal attributes does it take to be a successful gig / free lance worker or consultant?
- How to determine what a fair hourly rate should be for your services.
- Is gig work a viable route to land a full time position?
