Soft & Sharp: A Langer and Skal Exhibtion

Artists Amanda Langer and Ciel Skal are bringing together, for the first and only time, two completed series of works hosted by Next Wave Studios 4713 Helgesen Dr, Madison, WI on Sep. 14, 2024. Striking and unique, the Soft and Sharp exhibition offers a rare, raw look at fully realized mixed media works of 2D artist Ciel Skal and 3D artist Amanda Langer. An unconventional fine arts approach showcases how elements of sculpture and flat surfaces can combine contrasting mixed media. Langer and Skal’s large-scale works complement each other in unexpected ways. Skal and Langer returned to the Madison area to pursue their art careers, bringing diverse backgrounds and expertise to this exhibition. Skal's 2D works are deeply influenced by the environment. She begins by dripping ink on wet paper, letting it spread naturally, and then carves figures from the ink through a watercolor, ink, and graphite mixed media. Hands are the focal point, expressing the figures’ relationship to the self, often highlighted by deep shadows and stark contrast pulled from art historical themes. Langer's large-scale sculptures add a dynamic and immersive element to the exhibition. She explores contrasting natures within and around us. By combining fiber and metal in new ways, she highlights the variability within ourselves and the potential for harmony among diverse elements in society. "We chose Next Wave Studios because it reflects our vision of the nontraditional gallery space, a place where people can feel like they are part of an art party of sorts," said Skal. Next Wave Studios was created by Eli Asnien after working in the film industry in New Orleans for over 10 years. He returned to Madison to open a production studio that can be used by creatives in the local community. His vision is to offer an affordable yet cutting-edge space for local artists and creative businesses. Skal and Langer have now expanded the definition of creatives to include visual arts. This 3500 sq ft space will host live music, hors d'oeuvres, and beverages in an interesting atmosphere which encourages one to linger and converse.
