Los Angeles Clarinet Choir concert "Big Band Hits of the Golden Age" with jazz drummer Bernie Dresel
The internationally acclaimed Los Angeles Clarinet Choir --13 musicians performing on soprano, sopranino, alto, bass and contrabass clarinets under the direction of Margaret Thornhill - will perform a concert of "Big Band Hits from the Golden Age" Saturday, March 23, at the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room, 1115 El Centro, South Pasadena. Admission is free. Guest jazz drummer, Bernie Dresel, will be featured in the 1942 standard, "Bernie's Tune" in the world premiere of a new arrangement byJames McMillen, "Moonlight Serenade" by Glen Miller, and "Mambo" from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story," arranged by Michael Lowenstern. Works by Nestico, Amano, Bernard Hermann, and Alexis Ciesla will open the program.
Bernie Dresel is a first-call drummer and percussionist on the Hollywood stage for motion picture and television soundtracks. From 1992 to 2006, he was the drummer on numerous Brian Setzer Grammy Award®-winning recordings and more recently was the drummer on every recording that Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band has released, including the Grammy Award-winners. Drum! Magazine has put him on their list of “53 Drummers Who Made a Difference in the ’90s” as well as honoring him with a Drummie® for "Best Big Band Drummer." His jazz orchestra,The BBB Featuring Bernie Dresel, is one of Los Angeles' most exciting large jazz ensembles.
The LACC has a 17-year performing history, including concerts at colleges, schools, libraries, museums, senior residences, concert series, and international festivals and are well known to San Gabriel Valley audiences. They are the recipients of a multi-year matching grant from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
