LIGHT ALWAYS PREVAILS: Honoring the Enduring Voices of Iranians
Farhang Foundation is honored to present “LIGHT ALWAYS PREVAILS,” a Nowruz concert honoring the enduring voices of Iranians, a powerful performance bringing together two extraordinary female vocalists from different generations on one historic stage.
This year, the foundation welcomes back the grande dame of Iranian classical music, Maestra Parissa, who is considered an icon in the male-dominated world of Iranian classical music. Her illustrious career in Iran was halted following the 1979 revolution, and her last appearance on Farhang Foundation's Nowruz stage was in 2019. This event will mark a rare public performance as the community collectively mourns together.
The evening will also feature world-renowned, award-winning soprano Golda Zahra, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “one of the rising stars of her generation,” making her Persian-language stage debut.
The presence of these two world-class artists, one a living legend in classical music, the other a rising soprano star, marks a rare and historic moment. The concert takes place on International Women's Day, highlighting its significance, as women have been forbidden from singing publicly in Iran since 1979.
Both vocalists will perform with the Iranshahr Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Shahab Paranj. The program will feature works composed exclusively by Iranian composers, reflecting a wide spectrum of musical voices and styles.
The concert is presented in collaboration with the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and the Gramian–Emrani Center for Iranian Music at UCLA, home to Farhang Foundation's historic Iranian Music Degree Program, which remains the first and only dedicated academic degree in Iranian music outside of Iran. The program continues to play a vital role in fostering scholarship, performance, and innovation within an academic setting.
Farhang Foundation will also offer a series of virtual programs throughout the Nowruz season and continue its annual Nowruz Street Banner Design across Los Angeles, moving away from a more traditional design in favor of imagery that reflects the current moment and emphasizes hope, resilience, and collective strength.
