Original Live Symphony Score Synchronized to Fourth of July Fireworks in Simi Valley

This Fourth of July, Simi Valley audiences will experience a first for the city: a live symphony orchestra performing a newly composed 22-minute orchestral work synchronized in real time to the city’s fireworks display. Created specifically for America’s 250th anniversary, the original score was composed by World Soundtrack Award winner Joseph Metcalfe and will receive its world premiere on July 4 as the grand finale of Simi Valley’s America 250 Celebration at Rancho Simi Community Park. Performed by the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra, the composition tells the story of America’s journey through themes of courage, exploration, innovation, perseverance, and freedom, culminating in a celebration of the nation’s enduring spirit and future. The performance also reflects the remarkable growth of the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra itself. Just a few years ago, the symphony orchestra did not exist. What began with performances at SIMI Film Fest and the Spirit of Christmas Concert in Camarillo has grown into a thriving musical community of orchestras, choir programs, youth initiatives, and educational opportunities serving the region. “This performance is really a celebration of possibility,” said Metcalfe. “It’s the story of a nation that dared to dream big, but it’s also the story of a community that believed something remarkable could be built right here in Simi Valley.” Unlike a traditional fireworks soundtrack played through speakers, every note of the music will be performed live beneath the night sky as fireworks launch overhead. Nearly fifty musicians will perform the score in real time, creating a fully synchronized musical and visual experience. During a recent Simi Valley City Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Elaine Litster highlighted the significance of the project. “Normally when you commission a work like this, you pay tens of thousands of dollars,” Litster said. “Joseph is composing and arranging this music for the community from the heart.” The America 250 Celebration will take place July 3–4 and includes the Simi 250 5K Run, the citywide $2.50 Experience, a patriotic car cruise, Movie in the Park, live entertainment, community activities, and the July 4 fireworks spectacular. The live orchestral fireworks performance will serve as the culmination of the celebration and a tribute to America’s 250th anniversary through the power of music, community, and shared purpose.
