Pasadena Community Orchestra Concert – Including a Percussion Concerto

The highlight of the evening is the Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra by contemporary Canadian composer Allen Gordon Bell. It's performed by the amazing young percussionist, Torrance Buntyn, Jr. We are delighted to bring you this exciting concerto as part of our partnership with the Alliance of Black Orchestral Percussionists (ABOP). ABOP is a nonprofit providing professional development to young and emerging Black percussionists seeking a career in symphonic percussion. Through comprehensive training and mentorship, ABOP prepares Black percussionists for the concert stage, thereby helping to change the future face of symphonic orchestras nationwide. Our percussion soloist, Torrance Buntyn Jr., is a native of Jackson, Tennessee, and began his percussion studies at ten years old. Throughout his middle and high school years of percussion matriculation, he has won many awards through the WTSBOA All-West Tennessee Honor Bands and the TMEA All-State Tennessee Honor Bands. In 2018, he received outstanding recognition for performing in the Tennessee Bandmasters Association’s Honor Recital in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition, he performed with the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra, where he was the principal timpanist. Torrance is studying to get a Masters of Music degree in Percussion Performance at Southern Methodist University – Meadows School of the Arts, studying with George Nickson (principal percussionist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and Brian Jones (Principal Timpanist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra). In Dallas, Torrance serves as an active freelance percussionist, percussion teacher for students in the area, and serves as an extra percussionist for the New Philharmonic of Irving. The program includes the famous 'Adagietto' from Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony, a work by the early 20th century American composer Amy Beach, and a symphony by Josef Haydn. The concert will be held at the beautiful First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena on Sierra Madre Blvd. PCO concerts are always free admission, and there is plenty of free parking.
